Secret Scotland

If it’s secret, and in Scotland, it should be here.

Entire aircraft factory hidden from Japanese

Not in our neighbourhood, but very much on our theme, are these pics of a hidden aircraft factory.

It’s said to be the Lockheed Burbank Aircraft Plant, hidden by the Army Corps of Engineers in order to hide it from sight and protect it from possible air attack by the Japanese.

We didn’t get any other info, or a source to verify the story from, so that’s all we can pass on about the images, and hope it’s correct, but the view of the dummy land, flora, and building laid over the factory looked to good to ignore.

Puts the painted camouflage that can be found on UK buildings of the time to shame, but then again, given the inherent inaccuracy of altitude bombing from say 20,000 ft, then only low level bombing and strafing would have shown the difference.

It would be interesting to know if there were any similar exercises carried out here. So far, the only examples we’ve seen have been the painting of essential factory buildings with camouflage patterns in order to break up their straight edged outlines, and hide their original colour.
