Oops...

I think you mean August 15.

As you note though...

Japan was the last Axis Power to surrender, VJ-Day followed VE-Day by three months, so VJ-Day indeed marked the end of World War II.

The formal Japanese signing of the surrender terms took place on board the battleship USS Missouri while moored in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, and at that time President Truman declared September 2 to be VJ-Day.

But everyone ignored him.

I have to wonder whether a river bed tunnel was ever considered - i.e. cut/dredge a channel out of the firth and drop pre-manufactured concrete modules in it to [eventually, after sealing etc.] create a tunnel. They did it successfully in under Sydney harbour and it was much cheaper than a bridge.

Tate & Lyle is billed as the most famous and successful of the Greenock refineries, and was the last to close, thus marking the end of some 150 years of such business in the town.

I haven't looked in detail, but the GLEBE Refinery dates back to around 1865, and Tate & Lyle formed in 1912, when the various owners, which included Abram Lyle, merged with Henry Tate, so it must have been there during the war.

I found this interesting map and building list...

Gigha made £100,000 ! Well done especially considering that they have 2 second hand turbines which by modern standards are quite small.

Just goes to prove that you can generate usable amounts of electricity from the wind. I am sure wave and tidal will play their part but for now WIND WORKS.

I stand to be corrected as usual but I do not think Tate & Lyle had a refinery in Greenock during WWII. There were several sugar refineries the most well known ones being Westburn, Walkers and the Glebe. Westburn did become Tate & Lyles laterly but is niow of course closed.
