Secret Scotland

If it's secret, and in Scotland…

Live-Eye road views

Live-Eye camsIt’s funny how running the same searches that one usually does can sometimes provide a formerly unknown site of interest. All the more peculiar when the finding should also have popped up before, in others.

Regardless of why, it was nonetheless interesting when the Live-Eye-Views section of Traffic Scotland made itself known today.

According to their own info, images from the cameras are updated every three minutes, but the images shown will less frequent, ranging from five minutes between updates in busy areas, up to thirty minutes in quieter spots. I suspect that there’s some legalistic misinformation in the form of some drivel claiming that The Data Protection Act requires the images to be of such quality that neither faces nor numberplates can be recognised – if this is true, then there’s a LOT of webcam operators out there in in contravention of The Data Protection Act, and the courts should be filled with them. I hate this sort of weasely misuse of regulations, it’s probably wrong, and leads to enforcement of the myth that the DP Act is a great catch-all if you want to some sort of legal get-out clause to clutch at if you want to give someone the brush-off if they ask you for information, especially if you’re trying to utilise the Freedom of Information Act. However, this is another issue for another day.

The following list was current at the time of this post, however there are sure to be more added, so the previous link (or clicking on the image to the right) is a better bet if you’re looking for a particular location, as it takes you to a clickable map which opens on the target area, and shows the individual cameras, which can then be clicked to show their current view.

  1. Anyone been to Handa Island bird sanctuary and nature reserve? We were there walking on Sunday 14th June 2009 – fabulous! It’s a small, beautiful island with wonderful wild life, stunning geology, and great views.A three-hour easy walk has been laid out to show off the island and its bird life without disturbing any of the wildlife. Its location – a short boat trip across from the picturesque village of Tarbet – less than ten miles from Kylesku which is about an hour’s drive from Ullapool.

Your site came up as a related post on my site – Writing from the Twelfth House. Good to have found you!
