Secret Scotland

If it's secret, and in Scotland…

Joint Warrior 091 Submarine & Live Firing Activity

RN imageExercise Joint Warrior (JW) 091, a Joint Training Exercise, will take place from 11 until 21 May 2009 and will comprise of a programme of exercises conducted by land forces, warships, submarines and aircraft in the offshore and coastal waters to the north east, north and north west of Scotland, the latest in the major regular multi-force exercises, previously known as Neptune Warrior (NW).

Joint Warrior 092 will follow later in the year, from 5 until 28 October 2009.

Joint Warrior operations regularly utilise the facilities of the Cape Wrath artillery range in the far northwest of Scotland, which involves live bombing of Garvie Island which lies just off the Cape. This is the only European location where military aircraft can explode live 1000 lb bombs and it plays a crucial rôle in the final training of military pilots.

Current information about such exercises is published by the the Royal Navy on their Scottish Naval Exercises Information web site.

Vessels preparing to take in the exercise were seen grouping in the Firth of Clyde on Monday, May 11, while there were also numerous reports of military aircraft reported in the air.

Unfortunately, when we were there, it was one of those hazy days, and we weren’t that close to the actions, so everything was a little monotone and in the distance, however we’ve had a dig and lifted some examples of what could be seen. For comparison, one of the unretouched images is shown first to see what we had to work with, just to show how little colour and contrast was available, but you can’t say we don’t try.

I can usually post-process the worst of originals and get something close to the colour of the subject restored, but the problem here is that the subject carried the colour cast due to the conditions on the day, so that’s what was recorded. The original colour information simply doesn’t exist to be extracted and restored. Best described as a little frustrating. Applying more of the same fixes doesn’t make things any better, all that happens is that things get even worse, as recovered area start to shift and get silly. Applying automatic fixes doesn’t work either, as they make assumptions about which parts of the image are black, white, and grey, and since that information is already lost in the original, they produce something that needs more fixing than the original.
