Secret Scotland

If it's secret, and in Scotland…

‘Rent A Hen’ on South Uist

Hen head

Could have been a joke, but it’s quite serious, and seems to be a small success story too.

Apparently, the island once had a thriving egg industry which fell into decline.

After this, eggs had to be brought over from the mainland, and it seems they could be coming from as a far away as Europe (eg Poland.)

However, in 2012, Lochboisdale Amenity Trust received a grant of £32,000 from The Big Lottery and Village SOS, and set up the ‘Rent A Hen’ Scheme, whereby eggs are collected from local crofts, then distributed to most of the island’s hotels and shops.

Hebridean Free Range Eggs have become so popular, the trust is now seeking to expand the scheme and create more jobs.

Really nice to see something so simple, and dare I say obvious, actually being done and proving to be workable.
