Secret Scotland

If it's secret, and in Scotland…

Today is Fruitcake Day

27 December is Fruitcake Day.

What can be said of this heavy and dark cake that looks like it went through seven stages of baking and sounds like a fist thumping against a wooden table when set down on a surface.

It’s just a classic.

I’ve always loved it for its difference from a ‘normal’ light and fluffy cake.

It seems it can trace its heritage way back to the 16th century.

Fruitcakes have an incredible shelf life and can sit on a shelf for many, many years and still be edible and non-harmful to the human body, although probably not true of one if found dating from the 16th century. On a 2003 episode of The Tonight Show, Jay Leno sampled a piece of a fruitcake baked in 1878 and kept as an heirloom by a family in Michigan. Some say he’s still alive.

Actually, I think I’d rather have a freshly baked slice of fruitcake, still warm from the oven.

That’s REALLY nice.
