Secret Scotland

If it's secret, and in Scotland…

Kelvingrove’s back to normal(ish)

The really did finish the Dippy clear-out on the 10th.

Here’s Kelvingrove, back to normal-ish on Saturday 11 May 2019.

It’s very quiet – I think everybody is worn out.

Oddly, they hadn’t moved the seats (stacked just out of view in a side passage) back into the central hall for those who usually sit there during the organ recital.

This was just before today’s 1 pm recital.

Maybe the really really REALLY ‘grumpies’ that stayed away while Dippy was on show will take a while to return.

Glasgow University undercroft lighting has gone

Previously caught Under Bute Hall at Glasgow University, in the cloisters referred to as the undercroft, was some decorative LED lighting wrapped around the columns.

I’m not sure how long this was present, but when I was visiting a few weeks ago I noticed some of the lighting was not working properly.

I couldn’t be sure if it had failed, or if it had been damaged, but sad to say, looking at the pattern of failure, and the wiring, suggested damage was more likely than failure, a thought reinforced by the extent of the failure. Also, given how long the strings had been there, working fine, multiple coincident failures really weren’t that likely.

Sadly, subsequent visits have shown that ALL this decorative lighting has been removed.

Since it’s hard to take a pic of something that isn’t there, here’s a recent pic I happened to grab when passing through, just before noting the failure/damage, and the disappearance of the LED strings.

Be it due to vandalism, or planning, it’s a shame this simple enhancement to the area is no longer present.

Found some artwork and murals – just before an artwork and mural festival

Diving down streets you don’t usually travel can bring surprises, not always nasty.

Reversing one of my cycle routes showed up a venue and some art/murals I which simply weren’t visible when travelling in the opposite direction.

Eastvale Place was usually behind me, but was in front when travelling in the opposite direction.

It’s home to SWG3 and Yardworks.

Glasgow is preparing to welcome street artists from around the world as the third annual Yardworks Festival returns to the city.

The two-day celebration of live and curated graffiti art will take place in SWG3’s Glavanizers Yard from May 11 – 12.

Over the course of the weekend, SWG3’s walls and railway arches will be used as a canvas for more than 120 world-class artists, who will transform the area into a colourful display of artwork and murals.

As well as seeing live graffiti, guests will be able to enjoy various workshops and musical performances on the day and there will be hoards of food vendors, drinks bars on site to cater to your needs.

I found these murals in Eastvale Place this week.

I’m guessing a revisit might show some, or all, of these have gone, if they are painted over during the festival.

I looked at some pics from a few years back, and they showed different material.

I collected these as part of a set of ‘banker’ shots taken on the previous evening, when I was there later and it was darker.

They came in handy as I was able to make up a set with no vehicles parked in front of the murals.
