Secret Scotland

If it's secret, and in Scotland…

A lost cat story with an ending (and it’s a good one)

I think there’s only one ‘lost cat’ story I raised in here that actually came to a successful conclusion, and the owner followed up the ‘Lost’ posters with another offering thanks and letting folk know their cat had been found, and was safe, back at home.

That’s not to be misinterpreted as criticism, since the cat may never turn up or be found. I’m just saying it’s nice to know when there is a success.

There was news of a find after three years, thanks to the cat in question being microchipped, and checked when a concerned member of the public called in the Scottish SPCA to help a stray.

Microchipped moggy Amber had not been seen since disappearing from her home in Erskine, Renfrewshire, in 2016.

However, she was found around 19 miles away in Stepps and returned to her owner earlier this week.

The Scottish SPCA said the case shows how important it is for pet owners to get their animals chipped, as without it, it is unlikely Amber would ever had made it back home.

Holly Bates from the SSPCA said: “Amber was taken to our centre in Glasgow where she stayed until her owners were able to collect her and take her home.

“Instances such as this act as reminders as to why microchipping your cat is so important.

“If Amber had not been microchipped it is possible she may have never been reunited with her owners.

“It’s also important to keep your cat’s chip contact details up to date, even if they have been missing for an extended period.”

Purrfect surprise: Missing cat reunited with owner three years on

Kiki – Lost cat poster in Partick

Poster says it all. Spotted in Dumbarton Road.

No date on the poster (PLEASE put dates on them), but it wasn’t there a few days ago.

Can you help find Kiki?

Missing and lost cats in Queen’s Park

Time for some more old posters for missing/lost cats, this time somewhere in Queen’s Park.

Despite being a really bitter day even though it was not really that cold, a biting wind made it feel freezing, I did take a quick wander around a bit of Queen’s Park while I was there recently, before the addition of rain just made it too cold, and I left.

I only saw this pair of posters in one spot, although I’m sure if I had stayed long enough for a proper wander I would have come across more.

The dated one goes back to December 2018, while the other has the often seen problem of NO DATE, meaning that apart from its old appearance, you can’t really know whether or not there’s any point in paying attention to it.

Lost cat is mute in Pollokshields

Another in the unfortunately undated ‘Lost Cat’ poster series, seen last night, but no idea how long it has been up.

Guess from its (the poster’s) condition.

No name for the cat either (he’s mute, not deaf).

The folk that used to live at the bottom of the garden a few years ago seemed to be able to attract cats, and always had one or two. Lucky they’re not there any more – the way the cats around here mostly won’t let anyone near them means they’d probably have been out of luck.

But we did get a call from once, asking if we’d unlock our garage and leave the door open a bit…

Seems they’d lost their current cat over the weekend, and had eventually tracked her down by following meowing coming from our garage.

We opened the door and had a look, but nothing seen – but the neebs seemed happy enough when we saw them later.

Found cat – Bridgeton or Glasgow Green

Spotted this slightly different poster for a ‘Lost’ cat yesterday, hope it is a genuine one.

Not the usual ‘Lost Cat’ poster, but a ‘Found Cat’ this time.

Unfortunately, like many ‘lost cat’ posters, this one has no date, so there’s no way to tell if it’s new, recent, or old – other than by making a guess based on its condition under out lovely Scottish weather. But with the recent dry spell, it could still be weeks old.

Still, it can’t be that old, as this guessing came of age is often harder of the page is properly plastic laminated.

Some are put in plastic sleeves, but as these are really just unsealed plastic bags, they make things worse since they fill with rain water, which can’t then evaporate, and destroy the paper/print even faster as it never dries once it gets wet.

Assuming this is legit, hope the little tuxedo cat gets home.

Nala – another sad tale from the old collection of missing cat posters

Another post inspired by the proposals to brighten the area up, or maybe I should say ‘reminded’, since it comes from the right area.

Yet another from my collection of missing cat posters from years ago.

This one was probably collected somewhere near Glasgow Green, but I’m not sure where exactly, but before I reached Saltmarket.

There’s no year on the poster, but I can say that this was a find from 2015.

Another old lost cat poster – Personality is missing in Tollcross

Another missing cat poster, and another example of how things only seem to happen when I’m not on one of my usual routes.

Back on one of my Tollcross trails, I spotted this poster flapping about inside a bus shelter on the main road.

Now three months old, it tells of 9-year-old ‘Personality’, a grey and white cat that went missing back in July.

Sheldon – another missing cat from long ago

Hunter Street is not (for me at least) a Glasgow street name that rolls off the tongue with any sort of immediate familiarity.

In fact, most days I would have to go find it on a map (which I had to in order to work out where I saw this old missing cat poster).

I’ve no idea how old this one was when I first saw it, unfortunately the rain had got at, despite it being firmly attached with duct tape – it might still be there!

Spread the word…

DATING these posters helps.

To be FAIR – this one does carry the date (9 September), but I’ve no idea if that refers to the year I spotted it,  as I didn’t spot it in September, but some time later, and think the original year was 2015.

It’s interesting to note that most of those I’ve seen recently, and included here, have mostly carried a date to show when the cat went missing, so the idea seems to be catching on.

Sheldon went missing on the old railway in the area of Calton/Bridgeton – I wonder if he was found?

Long lost cat (Parkhead)

Filing away some recent pics (the lost cat posters), I came across an old one and since I’m on a lost cat poster roll, guess I should mention it.

I didn’t get around to using it after noticing it was dated – and the date was ONE YEAR earlier than the day I noticed the poster and tool a pic when I passed it. This was on Springfield Road, near the houses that had been built there recently (recognisable behind the pic of the cat).

The cat was lost for a year (since July 2015), but the poster and the tape looked brand new in July 2016 when I took the pic.

Coming across the pic again (I’d forgotten all about it) more than a year later, I guess this one was not found.

Lost cat – Royal (Bengal) – Glasgow city centre

After yesterday’s find of Animal Search UK while in Tollcross…

Today we have another organisation with a similar online presence, spotted first in The Barras area, then in St Andrews Square:

critteralert.com

But differing significantly in coverage, this one is international, as opposed the UK coverage of the previous group…

CritterAlert.com is a FREE international geographical Lost, Stolen and Found pet reporting and alerting site.

Significantly, both of these groups address a problem I highlighted on the home-made posters seen, specifically, the inclusion of a date to give anyone noting them an idea of whether or not the poster is new or old.

Meanwhile, on Glasgow Green

I hadn’t realised this was the same cat, until I saw the posters together!

Sadly, it shows what a bit of bad Scottish weather can do to a DIY poster in next to no time at all.

The following pics were taken on the 6th, and since the cat only went missing on the 5th, show how quickly some heavy wind and rain can do damage.

At least this one has the cat’s name included, ‘Royal’.

Geri – missing in G32 since July 2017

I seem to have ‘collected’ quite a few missing cat (posters) recently, but I think most of them are a little old, and are either being spotted as I wander around places I haven’t managed to get to for a while or, like the one below, seem to be repeated appeals.

It’s only a couple of days since I used this gate at Tollcross Park, and I don’t think even I am dozy enough to have missed this one, and I saw it right away yesterday.

It’s fresh and clean. With the recent rain and wind, I doubt it would have been so clean when spotted, hence the assumption it’s a repeat.

The web site address is not too obvious (lots of mention for good old Facecrook though) so this is Animal Search UK which is associated with Cats Protection:

animalsearchuk.co.uk

See also Cats Protection

I’ll need to dig through recent pics, and do posts for others.
